⚠️ What is Cessna 525 Renewal ✈️

Cessna 525 proficiency check or license proficiency check is the term commonly used for type rating renewal procedure. The renewal checkride - with an EASA Type Rating Examiner brings back the validity of expired C525 typerating. We are talking about Cessna 525 type rating renewal proficiency check when the type rating has been expired - even for 1 day.

Cessna 525 Renewal Proficiency check may also be combined with the prof check required and directed by Operational suitability data for the particular variant of C525 series aeroplane.

Cessna C525 Citation ➡️ renewal LPC

Renewal of a Cessna C525 Citation type rating is a process to be followed once the C525 rating is expired. To bring back the validity of Cessna C525 type rating, it is necessary to attend refresher training according to the procedure set by the flight school to pass a checkride with the TRE examiner for the Cessna C525 type. However the common procedure called proficiency check or license proficiency check - LPC applies for both revalidation and also renewal of the Cessna 525 type rating.

Typerating renewal ➡️ legal background

Proficiency check for renewal of the C525 typerating is subject of paragraph FCL.740(b) and AMC1 FCL.740(b). The proficiency check is subject of recommendation by the flight school. The ATO has to establish the renewal procedure to re-gain the skills and proficiency required for Cessna 525 type rating holder. That means it is necessary to involve flight school (ATO) to renew C525 privileges.

Refresher training exemption

The pilots holding the Cessna 525 typerating in their ICAO license - e.g. holders of FAA license are exempted from attending the refresher training in flight school, so they can proceed directly to the proficiency check with TRE C525. This is granted by FCL.625.IR(e) for the C525 related instrument rating and by FCL.625.IR(f) for C525 type rating as follows:

  • Holders of a valid instrument rating on a pilot licence issued by a third country in accordance with Annex 1 to the Chicago Convention (e.g. FAA) shall be exempted from complying with the requirements in points FCL.625.IR(c)(1) and FCL.625.IR(d) when renewing the instrument rating privileges contained in licences issued in accordance with Part FCL.
  • The proficiency check mentioned in points FCL.625.IR(c)(2) and FCL.625.IR(e) may be combined with a proficiency check performed for the renewal of the Cessna 525 type rating.

So in other words - if you are a holder of foreign license with valid Cessna 525 typerating and at the same time you are a holder of an EASA license with endorsed (and expired) Cessna 525 typerating, you can renew the validity of your expired EASA C525 typerating without attending the renewal procedure in EASA ATO.

Cessna 525 ➡️ typerating renewal procedure

Hard law requires by FCL.740(b) to attend the renewal refresher training in flight school as a part of the Cessna 525 typerating renewal procedure. AMC1 FCL.740(b) describes furhter the content and purpose of refresher training required for type rating renewal.

The objective of the C525 refresher training is for the applicant to reach the level of proficiency necessary to safely operate the particular variant constituted in C525 endorsement. The amount of refresher training needed is determined on a case-by-case basis by the flight school, taking into account the following factors:

  • the experience of the applicant;
  • the amount of time elapsed since the privileges of the rating were last used;
  • the complexity of the aircraft;
  • whether the applicant has a current rating on another aircraft type; and
  • where considered necessary, the performance of the applicant during a simulated proficiency check for the rating in an FSTD or an aircraft of the relevant type or class.

It should be expected that the amount of training needed to reach the desired level of proficiency will increase analogously to the time elapsed since the privileges of the rating were last used. Nevertheless taking into account the factors listed iabove, the flight school may also decide that the applicant already possesses the required level of proficiency and that no refresher training is necessary. In such a case, the certificate or other documental evidence should contain a respective statement including sufficient reasoning.

After having determined the needs of the applicant, the flight school should develop an individual training programme based on the initial Cessna 525 typerating training, focusing on the aspects where the applicant has shown the greatest needs. Since there are many different variants constituting into the common C525 license endorsement, the refresher training should also reflect the requirements of EASA Operational suitability data for CE525.

Refresher training should include theoretical knowledge instruction, as necessary, such as for type-specific system failures. The performance of the applicant should be reviewed during the training and additional instruction should be provided to the applicant, where necessary, to reach the standard required for the C525 proficiency check.

After successful completion of the training the flight school will issue the applicant with a training completion certificate or another document specified by the competent authority, describing the evaluation of the factors essential for the scope of the refresher training, the refresher training received, and a statement that the refresher training has been successfully completed. The training completion certificate should be presented to the EASA examiner prior to the proficiency check. Following the successful renewal of the Cessna 525 type rating, the training completion certificate or the other document specified by the competent authority and the examiner report form should be submitted to the state of license issue - SOLI.

One of the important aspects is a type of the operation under the pilot intends to operate the Cessna 525. Specifically in case of Cessna C525 Citation it can be operated in either or combination of both - single-pilot operations and multi-pilot operations

In particular, single-pilot operation of the Cessna C525 Citation may require different procedures to be focused on during the refresher training other than multi-pilot operation of the Cessna C525 Citation. That also applies to the complexity of the variants constituted in the common C525 license endorsement.

Scope of ✈️ Cessna 525 proficiency check

The scope of the flight training as well as the checkride with Cessna 525 examiner is described in Appendix 9 of Part-FCL, Regulation (EC) 1178/2011.

During the proficiency check, the Cessna 525 examiner shall verify that holders of the  type rating maintain an adequate level of theoretical knowledge. The C525 TRE may choose between different proficiency check scenarios containing simulated relevant operations. The operator proficiency check may be combined together with your renewal license proficiency check.

Cessna C525 ➡️ Instrument rating cross-credit

Once passed the C525 proficiency check, you will be a holder of type-related instrument rating. If you are a holder of additional class ratings or type ratings, you can apply the cross-credit for your additional type-related or class-related instrument ratings. This is done by applying the Appendix 8 to Part-FCL. It is important to notice that to apply the cross-credit the other class or type related instrument rating shall be valid at the time of the C525 IR proficiency check.

The C525 type-related instrument rating revalidates other instrument ratings as follows:

  • SE class rating (*) , and
  • SE type rating (*) , and
  • SP ME class or type rating except for high-performance complex type ratings, only credits for Section 3B of the proficiency check in point B.5 of Appendix 9

* Provided that within the preceding 12 months the you have flown at least three IFR departures and approaches exercising PBN privileges, including at least one RNP APCH approach on an SP class or type of aeroplane in SP operations, or, for multi-engine, other than HP complex aeroplanes.

Cessna C525 ➡️ type rating validity

In accordance with FCL.740(a) the validity of the Cessna 525 type rating is 12 months (1 year). The validity period starts by the day of the C525 prof check and ends up by the last day of the month plus 12 months.  The validity of the C525 type rating can be again revalidated 90 days prior expiry date with keeping current expiry pattern.

However the recent experience on a specific variant of the Cessna C525 Citation is also a limiting factor. FCL.710(d) mandates the pilot to attend additional differences training, or familiarization training and additional checking if he has not flown a particular variant of the Cessna C525 Citation for more than 2 years (24 months), . The method of recurrent training and checking is established in EASA Operational Suitability Data document forCessna C525 Citation type.
